Shop. If city ordinances allow it, you could turn your garage into a shop. It could be a beauty parlor, a used clothing shop, gift shop, etc. Here you will also need shelves, pegboard to hang things on, and racks to display hanging clothing if you have a clothing store, counters, and more. One thing that you do not want to do is overcrowd your garage. You want to make sure that the people who visit have room to move around. Always make sure that your displays are attractive. You could have a regular garage door or one that has door for customers to enter so you do not have to leave the area exposed when open. Again, you can paint the walls white or choose vibrant colors. What color you use depends on what you are using the garage to sell. You will also have to advertise and put a sign in the yard advertising your shop or on the garage itself.
Parking Guide: It’s not uncommon to find an assortment of parking scratches and bruises in residential garages. One of the most popular remedies is the old tennis ball on a string hanging from the ceiling trick. This is a time tested remedy that works, but there are also modern solutions as well. Enter laser and proximity parking guides. Laser guides typically attach to the ceiling on or near the garage door opener. When the door is opened, the laser is activated and lights up a beam. All you have to do is line up the beam to a particular spot on your dashboard when your vehicle is already parked. Then, each time you pull in, let the preset beam show you where to stop. You can get just a single laser or a dual-laser depending on the needs of your garage. Proximity sensors, unlike lasers, mount on the wall you approach when you park in your garage. With these, you simply preset the distance between your bumper and the sensor. Then, as you approach, the sensor will tell you when to stop. Some models even act like a stoplight, with a yellow caution lamp, followed by a red stop lamp.
The answers you provide for these questions will go a long way in helping you determine which type of garage shelves are best suited for your storage needs. To expand on the examples further, if you have heavy items, you will most likely prefer to use metal shelving units as they tend to be a little more sturdy than their plastic counterparts. This, of course, is not to say that the plastic shelves are weak, but for heavy items it is bet to go with the most industrial strength products you can find, otherwise you might find yourself cleaning up a mess of collapsed boxes later down the line. So, by taking stock in what you want to store, you will be able to make the best choice where your garage shelving needs are concerned.
On the other hand, hard plastic garage storage cabinets are easy to install, more durable and economical. Once you have proper storage space for tools, you no longer have to hunt for things as they would be stored in the right places. Wrenches, screwdrivers and paint brushes can be stored in shallow compartmentalized drawers or on pegboard hooks instead of large deep drawers as they might get lost there. Tools that are used often can be hung on pegs and stored that way as it saves the hassle of opening the drawers over and over again.
Wood or Metal: Garage cabinets come in wood or metal. Both substances have their benefits and their drawbacks. The one you choose ultimately depends on your needs, budget, and tastes. With wood, you have the advantage of more sizes and shapes than you do with metal. You also have a wider variety of powder coat colors from which to choose. The majority of these systems use a medium density fiberboard (MDF), which is strong and dense. Its use creates a long-lasting unit. What you need to look for is a system that has a protective finish. Those without this finish will not last as long and are not as durable in areas that are not temperature controlled.
The pegboard storage is not just for the garage though. It can be used to make the laundry room easy to get around in and more functional too. Shelves can be used for the iron, spray starch, lint remover, stain remover and other items. The ironing board can be hung to save space along with a mop for quick clean ups. On the dowel provided on one of the shelves empty hangers can be placed for hanging clothes on as they come out of the dryer.
One other thing that you can do which will make a difference in the garage is to finally sort through the items and get rid of anything that you are not using. The choice of whether to throw those items away or sell them through a yard sale (or online) is going to be up to you. You might be surprised with how many of those items you can remove from the area and how much of a difference it is going to make in the usable floor space in the garage. Once you have made these changes, the only decision that you are going to need to make is if you are going to park a car in the garage or use it for another purpose.
