One of the options that is available for this area of the home comes in the form of garage storage systems. These come in almost every shape and size that you can possibly imagine, from shelving units that are going to line the walls of the garage, down to some rather unique items that will hang bicycles, fishing rods, or other relatively unused items from the ceiling. Once you begin to look at the systems that are available for storage in the garage, you will likely be surprised with everything that is available to you.
The pegboard storage can be used in the workbench area, to store all the tools that are used in building or repairing things. This way the tools are easily found when needed for use, so there’s no need to go rambling around trying to find something. Working on any project will be a snap with this kind of organization. Another way to use the pegboard garage storage system is to neatly arrange all the gardening tools. Racks and shovels can be hung to get them off the floor. Clippers, pruning shears and other smaller gardening tools can be hung up too. Shelving can be added to hold watering cans and other things that will not be hung. Also a roll of paper towels can be placed on the dowel provided on one of the shelves.
Parking Guide: It’s not uncommon to find an assortment of parking scratches and bruises in residential garages. One of the most popular remedies is the old tennis ball on a string hanging from the ceiling trick. This is a time tested remedy that works, but there are also modern solutions as well. Enter laser and proximity parking guides. Laser guides typically attach to the ceiling on or near the garage door opener. When the door is opened, the laser is activated and lights up a beam. All you have to do is line up the beam to a particular spot on your dashboard when your vehicle is already parked. Then, each time you pull in, let the preset beam show you where to stop. You can get just a single laser or a dual-laser depending on the needs of your garage. Proximity sensors, unlike lasers, mount on the wall you approach when you park in your garage. With these, you simply preset the distance between your bumper and the sensor. Then, as you approach, the sensor will tell you when to stop. Some models even act like a stoplight, with a yellow caution lamp, followed by a red stop lamp.
Oil absorbent pads are also a necessity for cleaning up spills and other accidents. Spills are unavoidable in this business, but the last thing I want is for my garage floor to be covered in unsightly stains. The only remedy is to clean up a mess with oil absorbent pads as soon as it happens so the stuff doesn’t have a chance to soak in. I also use an eco-friendly powder agent to take care of any residue that the oil absorbent pads might have left behind. The result is that my garage floor is as spotless today as the day I moved in!
Shelving: We all know shelves are a great for organizing. With proper installation L Frame brackets can supply a great base for making shelves. The additional shelving creates a place to store boxes that you can’t fit in your attic and they make it easy to get things up off the ground and make more walking room in your garage. Recently I’ve seen a lot of people building shelving around their pegboards to provide a great area to place all of their power tools that come with those fancy hard plastic-carrying cases. This is a great idea for any garage. If you have any special power tools, such as drills, saws, air tools shelves make the perfect place to store those carrying case. One of the most underutilized areas to place shelving is above the garage doors. If you have a ladder it’s a great place that you can create shelving to around the entire perimeter of your garage. This allows even more storage space that is commonly left unused.
The accessories are just as cheap. The basic 5/8” hook for a standard quarter inch pegboard can be as low as.34 cents each, and many times you can get a lot of them for free when you buy the board itself. These basic hooks are made from heavy duty galvanized steel rods, and have integrated tabs for added safety. You can buy them in various sizes from 5/8” up to three or four inches depending on your needs. You can also get them in different styles, for holding oddly shaped items like pliers, screwdrivers, and many others.
Having the right storage options along the walls can also make a difference in the look and usage of the garage. If you’re simply utilizing shelves, you really are not making enough use of the space. Having some storage cabinets where you can actually put things out of the way is one option that is open to you. A well-placed peg board can also assist you in getting some of the smaller items off of the floor and making them more readily available when you need them. There are a variety of pegboard hooks that are on the market which can help you to hang everything from a screwdriver to larger items that you may not have ever considered hanging on a pegboard.
