Anyway, I’ve learned that working on cars is a whole lot easier if my garage is as clean and organized as possible. That’s why I’ve got pegboards all along each wall, several toolboxes, and a bunch of oil absorbent pads right at my side. I’ve gotten in the habit of hanging my tools neatly on the pegboards or placing them in a toolbox as soon as I’m done using them. This cuts down on wasted time because I no longer have to spend five minutes looking for a particular wrench. I know exactly where it is at all times.
Hooks: Rubber coated hook hangers are great ways to store heavy-duty items in your garage. These typically have a thread on the end of the hook that allows you to embed them deeply into the garage wall. This provides great strength and leverage when storing objects in your garage. A great example of these hooks at work is with bike storage. Bicycles are typically very heavy and take up quite a bit of space. If you can get these things up off the ground and hanging from a hook you can make a ton of room yourself in the garage.
If you want a cheap and easy way to solve a variety of garage storage needs, then pegboard organizers are the answer. What they are is a large tempered wood, metal or plastic board, with multiple holes that accept a variety of different hook peg products. They come in many different sizes, from 4’x4’ items, to panels that can spread across the entire length of a wall, or your whole garage wall space. Some are even free standing, meaning they have legs, and you can utilize both sides.
Peg Boards: Pegboards are on the cheapest ways to organize your garage. They are incredibly easy to hang on your wall and they make it easy to organize tools and other small objects into a nice and neat little area. Pegboard hooks come in hundreds of varieties and they can essentially fit any tool that you want to hang. They even work great for hanging heavier tools because they leverage the pegboard to provide additional support. Pegboards provide a great way to organize hundreds of tools, everything from screwdrivers to socket sets. They make every tool very accessible without cluttering up a bunch of drawers. Because the pegboard lays flat against the wall you don’t have to worry about bumping next to it in your car. Pegboards are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to whip any garage into shape!
Pegboard storage ideas are one of the cheapest ways to go as far as the cost of the pegboard itself, as well as the accessories for them. A full wall section can cost as low as $10 dollars for a four by four section, depending on the kind of materials used. You can effectively do your whole wall for under $200, if you want to go with the wood press board.
Light Switch: Another way to modernize your garage is to upgrade the light switch with one that’s illuminated when the lights are off. This eliminates fumbling around looking for the switch while leaning over, and holding the entry door open for enough light to find the switch. Even better, it’s inexpensive and easy to do yourself. With basic knowledge of electricity, all you have to do is turn off the breaker that feeds the switch and wire up the new switch the same way. There are no additional wires to worry about. The end result is a mild orange glow that’s easy to find in the dark. Another option is to add motion sensors to your garage lights so they come on as soon as you open the door. You can even get motion bases that screw into standard sockets. Once installed, all you have to do is screw in the light bulb as usual. This is a clever way to have motion activated lighting without having to do any wiring.
The pegboard storage is not just for the garage though. It can be used to make the laundry room easy to get around in and more functional too. Shelves can be used for the iron, spray starch, lint remover, stain remover and other items. The ironing board can be hung to save space along with a mop for quick clean ups. On the dowel provided on one of the shelves empty hangers can be placed for hanging clothes on as they come out of the dryer.
